Summer RE Sessions

Many of you asked for simple, easy-to-use summer curricula with fun and deep teachable moments. Now there are two to choose from!
  • Magic Summer - Celebrating the magic of service, silence and sunshine!
  • Can Do Summer - Celebrating the "can-do spirit"!

General Details
Each curriculum provides you with eight simple Sunday morning sessions (and one more that takes a bit more planning). Here are more details:
  • Sessions are designed for one hour, but the projects can be extended if more time is needed.
  • Sessions are designed for a multi-age group from preschool to 5th graders. While not designed for middle and high school youth, many youth will enjoy helping as leaders since the session are project-based.
  • The sessions have clear instructions and use easy-to-find supplies.
  • Most sessions may be offered indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather.

What's the Difference Between the Two?

Can Do Summer: Curiosity, Imagination & the Can-Do Spirit!
This program's aim is to foster the “can do spirit” and help children face challenges with confidence. To this end, we anchor the sessions in our UU practices of curiosity and imagination, two skills that are key to feeling empowered and excited to try and make new things. Each week features an adventure of building something new, including: blanket forts, fairy houses, junk sculpture, fancy paper airplanes, obstacle courses, and more!

Magic Summer:  The Magic of Service, Silence and Sunshine!
Each of the eight sessions is built around Katie Covey's three magic "S's":
  • Service to Others: Helping others is a magic antidote to isolation, worry and sadness. Service to others pulls us out of self-concern and connects us to wider world. It invites us to experience and reaffirm our sense of agency and empowerment.
  • Silence and Mindfulness: In a busy and buzzing world, stillness helps us find and listen to our own voice. In a world that distracts and seeks to control our attention, silence enables us to make our own choices and notice the quieter gifts waiting for us to find them.
  • Sunshine and Movement: Summertime is a magical time of less formal learning, and of more connection to nature and the outside. So in these sessions, we include outside games, which reinforce our interdependent and restorative relationship to nature, and allow children to revel in the joy of being together again. We also offer indoor variations.  All of the games also introduce the secret fourth  magical “S” of Silliness, that special magical humor which helps us stay lighthearted and carefree, able to make it through when life gets hard.
It's our belief that each of these “S’s” act as magic doorways, enabling our children to connect to their deepest selves, their community and to the joy of life around them.
